Food Safety and Quality Control Specialist

Department: Operations 
 Reports To: Production Manager
 Location: Zeeland, Michigan
 Hours: 9a-5pm Monday-Friday (On-site)
 Salary Range: Commensurate with experience

Position Summary

The Food Safety and Quality Control Specialist is responsible for ensuring Pangea Reptile maintains effective food safety programs and plans within production operations, while supporting compliance with applicable federal, state, and international regulations governing animal food production, including internal auditing, product safety, ingredient validation, and labeling.

This role serves as the company’s internal resource for regulatory compliance and food safety programs. The Specialist will manage compliance documentation and systems, support internal and external audits, and work cross-functionally with Operations, Marketing, Procurement, and R&D to ensure regulatory alignment and audit readiness across the organization.

 


Key Responsibilities


 


Food Safety & Preventive Controls

  • Maintain and update the company’s Food Safety Plan in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain or obtain Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification.
  • Develop, maintain, and audit HARPC (Hazard Analysis Risk Based Preventive Controls)-based food safety programs and the company’s Food Safety Plan in alignment with FDA and industry standards.
  • Identify potential hazards and ensure appropriate preventive controls are implemented.
  • Ensure monitoring, verification, and corrective action records are properly documented and maintained.
 


Internal Food Safety Audits

  • Conduct internal audits of food production processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, food safety plans, and operational SOPs.
  • Identify gaps and work with operations leadership to implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain documentation and verification records.
 


Audit & Inspection Support

  • Serve as a primary internal contact for regulatory inspections and audits from agencies such as FDA, USDA, APHIS, and state regulatory bodies.
  • Prepare documentation and ensure operational readiness for regulatory and third-party audits.
  • Track corrective actions resulting from audit findings and ensure timely resolution.
 


 


Regulatory Compliance

·         Support compliance with applicable FDA, USDA, APHIS, AAFCO, and state regulations governing animal food production and distribution 
·         Ensure product formulations, labeling, and marketing materials meet regulatory requirements 
·         Maintain document control, specifications, supplier documentation, and audit-ready records 
·         Monitor regulatory updates and support implementation of required changes 
·         Support domestic and international shipping compliance, including export documentation and regulatory requirements

 


Product & Labeling Compliance

  • Review packaging, labels, and product claims to ensure compliance with regulatory and consumer product safety requirements.
  • Ensure products meet applicable ingredient, labeling, and manufacturing standards.
  • Ensure compliance with product labeling requirements such as Prop 65 warnings, choke hazard labeling, and other required consumer disclosures.
 


Workplace & Safety Compliance Support

  • Support compliance with OSHA workplace safety requirements through documentation management, internal audits, and regulatory recordkeeping.
  • Assist with maintaining safety documentation and regulatory records related to workplace safety programs.
  • Support safety inspections and ensure required documentation is maintained.

 


SOP Development & Training

  • Write, maintain, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to regulatory compliance, food safety, and production processes.
  • Ensure procedures align with regulatory requirements and the company’s Food Safety Plan.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on regulatory compliance, food safety, and documentation procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience in regulatory compliance, food safety, quality assurance, or product compliance within a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain PCQI certification.
  • Familiarity with AAFCO guidelines, FDA regulations, USDA/APHIS requirements, and export compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent documentation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into operational procedures.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams and with external customers. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Animal Science, Food Safety, or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience in pet food, animal nutrition, agriculture, or food manufacturing.
  • Experience managing regulatory inspections, audits, or certification programs.
  • Experience writing Food Safety Plans, HACCP programs, or compliance SOPs.
  • Familiarity with product safety regulations such as Prop 65 or consumer product labeling requirements.
  • Experience with document control systems, specification management, or compliance databases.
